Hey all I have a quick question. My pond is 1 acre. How many habitats is to many in a one acre pond? I have 2 right now. One tree not real big and a tire structure with rocks around it. So how many is to many? 3? 4? 10?

thanks,

You can easily have one entire shoreline (25% of perimeter) that is lined with structures side by side. Laid out this way the structure takes on the characteristic of a beneficial refuge area and true habitat instead of just a fish attractor for anglers.

See this slide and note the different reasons to have structure/ a habitat.

Hey Bill,

Thanks, I wasn't sure so I did not want to over do it. I can easily add a few more things then!

Thanks

RC, what did you do with tires for structure/attractant? I've got three old ones I found on my property in a spring feeding my big pond and, if I can do something productive with them instead of just taking them to the dump, would love to make something and drop it in the water.

Hey Todd,

I had five tires one was a bigger tractor tire I laid down flat. the I too 2 of the other tires took and put a bungie cord on each side so they would stay together. Then I put both of them in the middle of the big tractor tire. I then took the other 2 tires and laid them down on an angle against the big tracktor tire kind of like tilting them on edge. Fair warning though you will need to put some bricks or rocks in the inside of them to help them stay down for a while. Then I took 5 big cinder blocks and laid them around the outter edge of the tires. This will make a good spot for BG and will love to use it to spawn in. Plus minnows will spawn in and around it. If you only have 3 then lay one down flat and then tilt the other 2 up on an angle against the flat one. Then put a few cinder blocks around it. That would be better then nothing. Fish love tires!!

Cool idea, RC. Thanks for sharing that. Perhaps I'll weight down the tires with cinder blocks - maybe attach 'em with some chain so they don't break away - and then I'll get not only the tires in place, but have the blocks as well, though perhaps a little more randomly situated. One other advantage I have is that with the muskrats having drained about half the water, I have some great areas exposed right now that would normally be underwater where I can work on creating some good habitat prior to the dam being fixed and the water filling back up.

Thanks again for the idea!
