Fall is Upon Us
By Bob Lusk

As I write this letter, I’m in a silver bus with wings on it, probably 36,000 feet above the Midwest, somewhere between DFW airport and Detroit, Michigan. Seat 16A, no one in the middle seat. Leg room enough to drop the tray table, open this laptop and crank out a few words.
What a summer it’s been. Here, we’ve had 103 days at least 90 degrees, 52 of those hitting 100 or greater. It’s hard to escape that type of heat. Your pond doesn’t appreciate it, either. At Pond Boss world headquarters, we’ve received a higher-than-usual numbers of ponds-in-distress phone calls, all pretty much heat-related. If your pond made it through this brutal summer, it should roll well into fall.
Speaking of fall, this issue is loaded with timely information. Keep following Gilmore Creek Lake and how its qualities come together in unison, keeping its dynamics developing in healthy ways. Read about the guy whose YouTube videos we’ve all seen…lying on his dock, double-fisting giant bass as they grab a shiner from his hand. He’s done some spectacular work to grow those beasts.
Take a look at the camp trying to decide whether or not to build a lake. Compare that to your decisions of the past…or future.
Yes, we’ve got all the regular columns, and we’ll say a big “thank you” to Christine Cornwell as she submits her final Kid’s Korner piece. She’s been a blessing for more than fifteen years. Anyone want to take a shot at that column? Email me…let’s talk.
As we say hello to fall, I can’t help but think about the upcoming Institute of Higher Pondology. We’ve still got a small number of slots, if any of you are interested. It’s fun, highly informative, and you’ll make new friends…some of them will be for life.
Thank you for taking this Pond Boss ride with us. We’re having big fun, and we expect you are, too.

A series dedicated to Bob Lusk's general musings about land, water and life.
